Segmenting by Prior App Usage

First-time Users

  • Definition: Users who have had at most one session.
  • Format: Segment
  • Example: Target first time Users for a push notification that welcomes them to the application and thanks them for joining.

Returning Users

  • Definition: Users who have had more than one session.
  • Format: Segment
  • Example: Target returning Users for an A/B test to see if their behavior is changed by a new main menu experience.

# prior sessions

  • Definition: The lifetime number of sessions for a User, defined by 30 minutes or more of inactivity.
  • Format: Number
  • Example: You might consider Users with more than 9 sessions as “engaged Users” and want to target them with a special pricing page.

Time of first run

  • Definition: The time when Users have first run the application. Can be entered as date or datetime.
  • Format: Datetime
  • Examples: 12/2/2014 1:00 PM, 12/2/2014 13:00,1 weeks ago, 2 days ago. Note that when a date is specified without time, the time defaults to 12:00:00 AM. This is a particular instant in time, not the entire day. Only use inequality operators with times, such as: is since, prior to, and between.
  • Use Case: Target Users where time of first run is at most 1 day ago for welcome promotion.

Last active

  • Definition: The time when the User was last active in the application. See Time of first run for formats.
  • Format: Datetime
  • Example: Target Users who were last active 5 days ago for re-engagement.

Minutes previously spent in the app

  • Definition: The lifetime number of minutes the User has spent in the application.
  • Format: Number
  • Example: Target Users where minutes previously spent in the app is at least 10 for In-App message reminder.
